While on gardening leave between jobs, our founder and CEO François helped his eldest daughter prepare for the 11+ exams. Her success in these assessments quickly caught the attention of other parents and word spread quickly that he might be willing to take on a few more students. Requests for tutoring grew rapidly, and, within just two months, François found himself working with 20 students!
When the time came to return to work, it was clear to François that there was a significant demand for high-quality, engaging maths education. Many of his students were enrolled in top private schools across London, yet parents were dissatisfied with both the standard of teaching and the effectiveness of traditional tutoring. Schools weren’t providing sufficient support, and existing tutors lacked the ability to truly engage students. François wanted to fill this gap.
Increased demand over the past several years has meant that Wonders of Maths has quickly evolved from the more traditional one-on-one sessions to incorporate small group classes. This small-group learning has allowed us to ensure that more students benefit from a student-based, personalised approach but, with the added bonus of collaborative learning!
Throughout the expansion of Wonders of Maths, François’ aim has been clear and unwavering: to encourage a love for maths in every student by teaching them in their way.
Our approach to tuition is based on personalised learning, which allows us to adapt our lessons and teaching to suit how each student best interprets information. Over the years, we have gathered valuable information about how students learn, which has enabled us to recognise and understand trends in education. For example, we have found that the UK education system often overlooks visual learning methods, despite 70% of our 300+ students being primarily visual learners. To bridge this gap, we have adapted our methods to reflect this fact. In particular, our use of the Singapore method for teaching maths, which incorporates visual tools like blocks to introduce algebra. This approach has enabled our Year 5 and above students to confidently tackle complex problems in competitions like the Junior and Intermediate Mathematical Challenges!
Our weekly, in-person group sessions run during term time and focus on following the school curriculum through challenging students in each topic and preparing them for examinations/maths competitions. Classes are available from Years 2 to 13.
Our in-person Booster sessions run during Half Terms and holidays for Years 4 to GCSE students. They are designed to help students gain more practice with tricky topics, get ahead of the next term's work, or prepare for upcoming entrance exams.
Early Bird Maths Club is the perfect way to start your day with quick and focussed 30-minute sessions designed to improve number fluency, speed and accuracy in mental maths. Aimed at Year 3, 4 and 5 with more year groups to come!
